Sports medicine nowhere to be seen at Games

first_imgThe mess surrounding the Commonwealth Games seems to be getting worse with the 200-odd sports medicine doctors and nurses yet to be allowed entry into the Games Village to perform their assigned duties. With the news delays in completion of venues and athletes’ pull-out grabbing the headlines, the plight of the sports medicine doctors has been ignored.”The games could have been the ideal platform to launch sports medicine and allied sports sciences in a big way in India. But that is not to be. The responsibility of providing medical support to the athletes at the Games Village and at the stadia rests with the doctors of Delhi government hospitals who have no expertise or experience in sports medical cover,” Dr PSM Chandran, president of the Indian Federation of Sports Medicine said.”At the beginning itself, the OC failed to take the right step in ensuring quality sports medical cover for the Games when they arbitrarily appointed a couple of doctors who have no experience in organising medical cover to multidisciplinary events,” he said.Chandran blamed the indifference of the organisers for the current situation, where doctors and nurses are going on dharna . “No one is sure which agency is going to provide ambulances for the Games, medical personnel are paid nothing in return for their professional services, masseurs who are not trained in sports massage deployed for duties.” Chandran gave the example of the Wrestling Federation of India to underline his concern.”The wrestling team which is expected to win lots of medals at the CWG will be without the services of the team doctor and physiotherapist who were helping them in the training camps at Sonepat for over a year. They have to make way for the inclusion of a masseur, Rahul Sharma, who is the son of a senior official of the Wrestling Federation.Sharma is now checking into the Games Village to provide massage to the wrestlers with a broken arm. He has a fracture in his right forearm, which makes him unfit to participate in CWG.”advertisementlast_img read more

Marsh tips surprises from lesser cricket countries at Cup

first_imgFormer Australian wicketkeeper Rod Marsh says Ireland, Kenya, the Netherlands and Canada could cause a few surprises at the Cricket World Cup beginning in two weeks.Marsh, the director of coaching at the International Cricket Council’s Global Academy in Dubai, has worked with players from the so-called Associate nations for the past two years in preparation for the tournament beginning Feb. 19 in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The 63-year-old Marsh – who played 96 tests for Australia – and his assistants, New Zealand bowler Dayle Hadlee and Pakistan batsman Mudassar Nazar, have warned established countries not to take the less-fancied nations too lightly.”I am not saying one of those teams will win the World Cup, but I am saying they will give a very good account of themselves,” Marsh told Australian Associated Press on Monday. “These guys have prepared probably better than most of the test nations, because they haven’t had all the other competitions and distractions.”Ireland made the Super Eight stages in 2007 and Marsh says it has the talent to repeat that achievement this year.”Ireland are always well prepared, they have experienced players, most are playing county cricket and they are in pretty good shape,” he said.”They actually think they can win the tournament and not just compete, which I think is fantastic.”Batsmen from the four countries have been using the futuristic “Pro Batter” and “Spin Bowla” machines in Dubai on wickets made from Pakistan soil as they look to give themselves the best possible chance of success.advertisement”We’ve strived to get them into a position where they know all about batting on the subcontinent,” Marsh said. “We identified that the biggest problem for these guys in the past was that they didn’t make enough runs.”There has been a heap of footage shown to them about how the top players bat on the subcontinent and Mudassar has been a diamond in talking to them about batting and also reverse swing. They cannot be any better prepared.”last_img read more

Team India played IPL despite being well aware of their injuries: Bishan Singh Bedi

first_imgZaheer Khan at a training sessionI have been enjoying this mindless country vs club debate on 24-hour news channels. The discussion revolves around the fitness of star Indian cricketers who have decided to skip the West Indies tour because of injuries. There is nothing wrong if an injured player pulls,Zaheer Khan at a training sessionI have been enjoying this mindless country vs club debate on 24-hour news channels. The discussion revolves around the fitness of star Indian cricketers who have decided to skip the West Indies tour because of injuries. There is nothing wrong if an injured player pulls out of a series. But when some of these players continued playing for their Indian Premier League (IPL) teams despite knowing very well of their injuries, uncomfortable questions are raised. While Sachin Tendulkar excused himself from the entire tour to enjoy a well-deserved rest and spend some quality time with his family, Yuvraj Singh opted out because of a respiratory infection. Captain M.S. Dhoni and strike bowler Zaheer Khan will not play the odis. With Virender Sehwag nursing a shoulder injury, Gautam Gambhir was supposed to lead the Indian team. Now that Gambhir aggravated his shoulder injury during the ipl, Suresh Raina has been appointed captain by the selection board of the BCCI. Interestingly, all the players who have decided to give the Caribbean tour a miss citing injury or fatigue, played in the IPL.But no one wants to criticise a team that has just won the ICC World Cup. So, instead of asking those tough questions, people are beating around the bush. The channels will remain soft on these cricketers because cricket is their cash cow-crime and comedy being the other two. So let me play devil’s advocate. The issue here is not injury. It’s about priorities. Injuries are not new to Indian cricketers. Gambhir, Tendulkar, Sehwag, Yuvraj, Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer have routinely walked into the side by declaring themselves fit, and returned home midway through the series due to injuries. No one asked the trainers any questions, nor did the coach answer any. The BCCI remained silent. Only the insurance companies sent fat cheques as under the bcci contract if a player gets injured while representing the nation, insurance cash is guaranteed.advertisementThe circus has been going on for long and will continue. Look at our World Cup-winning team. All of them were injured last year but got fit just before the Cup and carried on through the IPL 4. With the BCCI’s cash league over, all of them crashed like a pack of cards. The players definitely needed a break, but they chose to sweat it out for the IPL. Gambhir’s right shoulder injury could have healed and he could have played for India if he had abstained from leading the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). But the most expensive IPL player this year at $2.4 million continued playing despite injuring his shoulder while taking a catch during the World Cup final against Sri Lanka in April. He aggravated it during KKR’s last league game against Mumbai Indians but went on to play in a knockout game three days later.Sehwag flew to London for his shoulder surgery the moment he realised that Delhi Daredevils would not make it to the last four of the IPL. Why did he wait? Why did not he go for the surgery immediately after the World Cup? Simply because he did not want to lose the IPL cash. Cheteshwar Pujara, a very promising player with an appetite for big scores and who excelled in South Africa last year, missed the Caribbean bus because of an injury sustained while playing for the Bangalore Royal Challengers at IPL.The BCCI does not care, nor do the players. It reminds me of the board’s obstinate refusal to allow cricketers to go through the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) norms. What was even more unacceptable was the unbecoming conduct of players like Tendulkar and Dhoni who quietly acquiesced with BCCI’s petty case against the WADA. What’s the message? Indian cricketers are above Usain Bolt, Roger Federer, Tiger Woods and Rafael Nadal? The cash-rich Indian board will not answer as it believes it is above all. Once it argued in a court that it did not need to follow the Indian sporting rulebook because it did not depend on ministerial doles, only to be admonished by the judges and the sports minister.I played cricket in an era when we didn’t have choices. I admire Dhoni and his boys. My wife tells me they are a different breed. They bleed blue, not red.last_img read more

Govt keeps Natgrid, NIA out of RTI ambit

| humtizsq

first_imgHere’s another blow to transparency in the government. After exempting the CBI, the government has now pushed the National Intelligence Grid (Natgrid) and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) out of the ambit of the Right to Information (RTI) Act.Putting Natgrid in the list of organisations exempted from making disclosures under the RTI Act will certainly fuel concerns as a citizen would not be able to seek details on whether any of his databases have been accessed by the investigating agencies through Natgrid. With the inclusion of Natgrid, NIA and CBI in the second schedule to the RTI Act – a decision which was made official through a gazette notification on June 9 – there are now 25 ‘intelligence and security’ organisations which are exempted from providing any information under the RTI Act, except information pertaining to allegations on any corruption and human right violations. To start off in 2005, the second schedule had 18 organisations on its list, which grew to 22 in 2008 and to 25 presently. Most of the 11 agencies which can access the Natgrid for getting database information on a citizen are also already exempted from the RTI Act.A government source said Natgrid needed to be kept out of the RTI purview because most of the 11 agencies authorised to access databases through the Natgrid are already exempted from RTI. “So anyway if a citizen wants to know if the Intelligence Bureau (IB) asked for any information on his bank account database through the Natgrid, the information cannot be disclosed as IB is an exempt organisation. Natgrid is not an organisation but only a forwarding tool and like an extended server of these 11 agencies,” the source said.advertisementSupreme Court lawyer and cyber law expert, Pawan Duggal, however, said the decision to exempt Natgrid from the RTI Act only strengthened the ‘Big Brother’ concept. “Its a huge setback to transparency. It’s like a blackout. We agree that national sovereignty is paramount but that is not tantamount to removing all levels of transparency,” he said. For more news on India, click here. For more news on Business, click here. For more news on Movies, click here. For more news on Sports, click here.last_img read more

ICC panel asks BCCI and PCB to resume series

| vknwcynx

first_imgPakistan and India have been urged to resume tours to each other by an International Cricket Council (ICC) task team, which has also recommended the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman lose his right to veto team selection. The neighbours have not played in a bilateral series since Pakistan toured India in 2007. Political relations became strained after the terrorist attack in Mumbai in 2008 and India postponed their return tour to Pakistan. The ICC’s Pakistan Task Team ( PTT) implored the Pakistan and India governments to seek swift resolution to enable “this great iconic series to resume”. “The absence of the traditional bilateral series between Pakistan and India from the international cricket calendar is denying millions of cricket loving fans across the world from enjoying an iconic series,” the report says.”It is also hurting the sport, particularly in Pakistan and the PTT sees no reason why this great sporting rivalry should not be restored as soon as possible, even if on neutral soil.” The Pakistani team is scheduled to tour India next year, and in the Future Tour Program for 2012-20 the ICC has scheduled at least three series between the teams. The PTT, chaired by England’s Giles Clarke, was formed in 2009 to ensure Pakistan retained and developed international cricket after the deadly attack on the Sri Lanka team bus in Lahore that March ended all major visits, and prevented Pakistan from co-hosting this year’s World Cup. Since then, Pakistan has hosted five ‘ home’ series in the United Arab Emirates and England. It also played against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka in July 2009 which was supposed to be Pakistan’s home series.advertisementIn ending its obligations, the PTT’s 38-page report presented to the ICC conference in Hong Kong last week regarded the appointment of the PCB chairman by the country’s president as highly unusual, and wants an end to the government’s undue interference in the PCB. The PTT made a number of recommendations about the PCB, including national team selection. The task team observed that Pakistan has had at least five different sets of selectors over the past five years, with the chairman of the board appointing the captain. “There must be stability in the composition of selection committee,” the PTT says. The national team is announced only when its approved by the chairman, but the PTT says the ” chairman’s right of veto on the selection of players should be removed”. Presently, 45 players are centrally contracted with the PCB, including 30 in Category A, B and C, with 15 receiving monthly stipends. However, the PTT has recommended reducing contracted players to 25 plus 10 on stipends.last_img read more

Ind vs Eng: India need to get their act together to latch on to top rank

| humtizsq

first_imgStunned by the humiliating defeat at the Lord’s, India will have to quickly get their act together as they go into the second cricket Test against England at Trent Bridge, Nottingham on Friday with a serious threat to their status as the number one team. The demoralised Indians, who lost the first Test by a resounding 196 runs, will have to pull up their socks if they hope to prevent the hosts from dislodging them from the top position. But the injury to pace spearhead Zaheer Khan, who may not be fit enough to take the field on the morrow, and the poor form of Harbhajan Singh have handicapped the bowling to a great extent while the form of some of their top order batsmen have compounded their misery. In case Zaheer sits out, either S Sreesanth or Munaf Patel will make it to the team with the Indians preferring to go into the crucial game with three pacers and a spinner on a Trent Bridge track which was expected to help the quick bowlers. While India would be desperate to do whatever it takes to hold on to their numero uno Test status, a series win by a two game margin will see England topple Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s men from the pinnacle. The visitors, however, can take heart from the fact that they lost the first Test in five of their seven tours (excluding Bangladesh) in last four years, and yet recovered to avoid a series loss with the exception of once in Sri Lanka in 2008.advertisementIndia came back from behind in Sri Lanka last year, and then against Australia at home and against South Africa, both at home and away. In Durban late last year, India bounced back in style after suffering a heavy defeat against the Proteas at Centurion. And though the past can be a source of inspiration yet it should not be considered a guiding light against a ruthless opposition, who have won 12 of their last 17 Tests while losing just two games. The Indian batting, except for a century by Rahul Dravid (103 not out) in the first innings and resistance put up by VVS Laxman (56) and Suresh Raina (78) in the second innings to save the match, was far from impressive during the opening Test that England won comfortably.Even Sachin Tendulkar, chasing his 100th international century, could make little contribution. In the absence of Zaheer, who sustained a hamstring strain during the Lord’s Test and was unable to bowl after the first day, Ishant Sharma and Praveen Kumar had to carry a huge workload on their shoulder. Moreover the fact that England could subdue them so overwhelmingly at Lord’s without any major contributions from openers Andrew Strauss and Alistair Cook, as well as Eoin Morgan, would also play on their minds. Going into the second Test, Zaheer’s injury has left the door open for either S Sreesanth or Munaf Patel to come into the side. While Sreesanth has the ability to swing at good pace, Munaf is a steady bowler and can hold one end up.Many experts are inclined to put it beyond Zaheer-less Indian bowling attack to claim 20 England wickets even though conditions at Trent Bridge are hugely inclined in favour of swing bowlers. For one, this England batting line-up is virtually without a tail and, two, there is only as much as the fast bowling duo of Ishant and Praveen can do.Meanwhile, Harbhajan’s form is also a cause of worry. At Lord’s the spinner ended up giving 218 runs for just a wicket. But the Indian management would have a tough task at hands when they sit down to decide who to play in tomorrow’s game, as the only other spinner in the squad, Amit Mishra, also did not have a great warm-up game. The failure of the batting line up, which includes the likes of Gambhir, Tendulkar, Dravid and Laxman, is also not going to help the team’s morale. Moreover, with tendulkar recovering from flu and Gambhir suffering from bruised elbow, India can only hope that the two key batsmen get back to full fitness tomorrow. If fit, the team would be banking heavily on Tendulkar to bail it out of trouble, along with Dravid and Laxman. India’s fate would largely depend on the trio’s performance against a potent English attack.Since December 6, 2009 when India became number one Test team, Tendulkar scored 1722 runs from 15 Tests before the Lord’s Test. But against a fiery English pace attack what India need is a strong start from the openers — inexperienced Abhinav Mukund and Gambhir.advertisementIt is important that India win the toss and put up at least 450 on the board. The pressure on England’s batting could only be exerted with a huge first innings total. But a score of 450 plus is easier said than done for India’s lower half, at least in the first Test, seemed to have completely lacked depth.Dhoni and Harbhajan, at number seven and eight, have been huge insurance for India with the bat in the past but the English attack seemed to have their complete measure in the first Test.India need at least two top order batsmen to be ready for the second new ball. In the absence of Virender Sehwag, India realistically can’t have a massive stand for the first wicket. It then exposes the middle order, who, even if they do well, could find their good work being wasted by the lower order with the second new ball.Dhoni, thus, will be critical to India’s batting plans but he could only be of value if he goes after the bowling. On the other hand, England could fall victims to complacency but it seems unlikely after they had things under total control at Lord’s, with Kevin Pietersen scoring a double century, Matt Prior hitting a reviving second innings century and Stuart Broad returning to his form.Another win here would give them a 2-0 lead and a stronger grip at becoming the world’s best Test side. England need to win 2-0 or 3-1 in the four-match Test series to displace India as number one Test team of the world. The pitch at Trent Bridge is not expressly quick but it provides help to seam and swing and England presently has a line-up as good as anyone in the world.James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Chris Tremlett proved a potent fast-bowling mix against India at Lord’s and they would look to carry on the momentum. Anderson has an uncanny wicket-taking knack here, where he finished with figures of 11 for 71 against Pakistan in last summer’s Test victory. The India team, in this battle to stay alive in the series and retain its hold at the top of the Test ranking, has almost forgotten that Tendulkar is just a knock away from scoring his 100th international hundred. But it could turn out to be a blessing in disguise as the legendary batsman may just utilise this opportunity of limelight away from him, to concentrate and come up with not just his 100th international ton but a match-winning innings for his team.Teams (from):England: Andrew Strauss (capt), Alastair Cook, Jonathan Trott, Kevin Pietersen, Ian Bell, Eoin Morgan, Matt Prior (wk), Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann, James Anderson, Chris Tremlett, Tim Bresnan.India: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt & wk), Gautam Gambhir, Abhinav Mukund, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh, Praveen Kumar, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Yuvraj Singh, Amit Mishra, Munaf Patel, Wriddhiman Saha, S Sreesanth.Match Referee: Ranjan MadugalleadvertisementOn-field umpires: Asad Rauf and Marais ErasmusThird umpire: Billy Bowden, Fourth umpire: Tim RobinsonMatch starts at 3:30 IST.With inputs from PTIlast_img read more

Pitch, not rash shots caused batting collapse: MS Dhoni

| hpejgunc

first_imgIndian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni blamed the unpredictable pitch for his team’s abysmal batting performance in the lost second ODI against Sri Lanka, rejecting suggestions that rash shots led to the stunning collapse.India were on Tuesday bowled out for 138 in 33.3 overs — their fourth-lowest ODI total in the past five years — by the host team, which chased down the target in under 20 overs. The five-match series is currently tied 1-1.”The pitch was next to the wicket we played on last time but it behaved in a completely different way,” Dhoni said referring to the track used for the opening ODI in which India posted a 300-plus score.”Initially the wicket was slightly on the slower side. Once Virat (Kohli) got out we lost a couple of more wickets very quickly.”Before the batsmen could assess the wicket, we lost two wickets played on. I thought after that it was too much for batsmen like Irfan (Pathan) and Ashwin to come in and take us out of trouble,” he added. But his opposite number, Mahela Jayawardene, disagreed with Dhoni insisting that the wicket was not that bad.”Probably a touch slower, there were quite a few good balls as well. We bowled in good areas, created pressure, maybe couple of bad shots as well but I will take that any day.”The important thing with the Indian batting line-up is picking up wickets and that’s the only way we can control things and that is what we did today,” he said.advertisementDhoni defended his batsmen’s shot selection, refusing to call them rash.”I don’t think they were shots that were really rash. People were looking for singles. If you see Rohit’s ball (the one off which he was dismissed), the shot was on. But he got an inside edge and it went onto the stumps.”It could have been his lucky day if it hadn’t hit the stumps and he was still there to carry on with his innings. It is part and parcel of the game and a big learning curve. Hope the batsmen learn and they assess the wicket very quickly (in the next game),” Dhoni explained. The wicketkeeper-batsman said the wicket here lacked pace and was difficult to bat on.”Over here the wicket was slightly different, it (the ball) was stopping before coming on. I don’t think there was too much swing for the bowlers, though there was a bit of breeze – meaning you can swing it a bit – but nothing unusual.”I just thought the pace of the wicket was not really coming onto the bat and that’s the reason why we lost too many wickets initially.”India now move to Colombo for the third game of the series and Dhoni said that his team has learnt some important lessons from the Hambantota stay.”The boys adjusted well to the conditions whether it was the bowling or the batting department. Today the performance wasn’t so good but still, the kind of wind we faced here was the kind that one usually gets to see in Wellington in New Zealand,” he said.”I think given the amount of time we had, we adjusted pretty well. So I am quite happy, (it was a) decent performance.”Slowly and gradually you will see all the youngsters learning, especially about the importance of the middle overs, because that is where most of the cricket is played – right from the 15th-20th over, onwards till the 40th over,” he added.last_img read more
