Toddler mauled to death by stray dogs in Chandigarh

| vknwcynx

first_imgA pack of stray dogs mauled a one-and-a-half-year-old boy to death in a park here, police said on Monday. The incident occurred on Sunday when the victim’s mother, who works as a domestic help, had left her four children in the park, while she went to a house to clean utensils. Ayush, a resident of Palsora, was playing along with three other children when the dogs attacked them. Too small to run for safety, the boy was surrounded and attacked by the dogs, even as other children managed to run from the spot. Later, a police control room vehicle took him to Government Multi-specialty Hospital, Sector 16, where he was declared as brought dead, police said. Residents of the area gathered at the spot and accused civic authorities of doing little to curb the stray dog menace. Residents living in central and southern parts of Chandigarh have often complained that a growing number of stray dogs in parks and gardens had made it difficult for people and children to use them. There have been several cases of dog bites here in the past, they said.“We fear sending our children to play outside. The parks near our home are full of stray dogs and we cannot allow children to go out without an adult accompanying them,” Baldev Chand, a resident of Sector 49 here, said.last_img read more

first_imgAssam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Monday inaugurated a goat farm at Chamuapara in Darrang district for rehabilitating pro-talks member of the United Liberation Front of Asom. He also distributed subsidies to former militants of various groups under the Swabalamban, or self-reliance, project.Mr. Sonowal said the rehabilitation scheme was conceived by the State government to provide means of livelihood to the former members of militant outfits who have decided to return to the mainstream so that they could live a life of dignity.“Our government has been putting a lot of emphasis on creating self-employment opportunities for the youth of the State and the young generation must take up agriculture with a renewed vigour to contribute to economic growth,” he saidadding that 18 lakh soil health cards were issued across the State during the last three years.Generating revenueThe goat farm, built by the government, would be managed by 28 former militants under an agreement that they share a part of the profit with the Veterinary Department. Some 60 hectares of land adjoining the farm, lying unused for years, has also been assigned to another set of former militants to cultivate.“We are planning to let former militants, trained in farm skills, utilise unused government land for animal husbandry and agriculture or horticulture pursuits. This is aimed at checking encroachment of government land besides generating revenue through the rehabilitation scheme,” said Hiren Nath, Inspector-General of Police (Special Branch), who is also the rehabilitation officer in the State. He said that Sri Lanka has expressed interest in replicating the Assam model to rehabilitate former members of the LTTE.last_img read more

ICC panel asks BCCI and PCB to resume series

| vknwcynx

first_imgPakistan and India have been urged to resume tours to each other by an International Cricket Council (ICC) task team, which has also recommended the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman lose his right to veto team selection. The neighbours have not played in a bilateral series since Pakistan toured India in 2007. Political relations became strained after the terrorist attack in Mumbai in 2008 and India postponed their return tour to Pakistan. The ICC’s Pakistan Task Team ( PTT) implored the Pakistan and India governments to seek swift resolution to enable “this great iconic series to resume”. “The absence of the traditional bilateral series between Pakistan and India from the international cricket calendar is denying millions of cricket loving fans across the world from enjoying an iconic series,” the report says.”It is also hurting the sport, particularly in Pakistan and the PTT sees no reason why this great sporting rivalry should not be restored as soon as possible, even if on neutral soil.” The Pakistani team is scheduled to tour India next year, and in the Future Tour Program for 2012-20 the ICC has scheduled at least three series between the teams. The PTT, chaired by England’s Giles Clarke, was formed in 2009 to ensure Pakistan retained and developed international cricket after the deadly attack on the Sri Lanka team bus in Lahore that March ended all major visits, and prevented Pakistan from co-hosting this year’s World Cup. Since then, Pakistan has hosted five ‘ home’ series in the United Arab Emirates and England. It also played against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka in July 2009 which was supposed to be Pakistan’s home series.advertisementIn ending its obligations, the PTT’s 38-page report presented to the ICC conference in Hong Kong last week regarded the appointment of the PCB chairman by the country’s president as highly unusual, and wants an end to the government’s undue interference in the PCB. The PTT made a number of recommendations about the PCB, including national team selection. The task team observed that Pakistan has had at least five different sets of selectors over the past five years, with the chairman of the board appointing the captain. “There must be stability in the composition of selection committee,” the PTT says. The national team is announced only when its approved by the chairman, but the PTT says the ” chairman’s right of veto on the selection of players should be removed”. Presently, 45 players are centrally contracted with the PCB, including 30 in Category A, B and C, with 15 receiving monthly stipends. However, the PTT has recommended reducing contracted players to 25 plus 10 on stipends.last_img read more

10 Questions: GIA Kermit

| vknwcynx

first_img6. Who’s your favorite player on this year’s team?My favorite player this year is, no surprise, Marcus Smart. Talent like him hasn’t been through Stillwater in a while. He does it all and it’s fun to watch.7. What about your all-time favorite player?All-time favorite player is a little harder. It’s tough to decide between the starters on the ’03-’04 team. If I absolutely had to choose I’d say John Lucas.8. Do you plan on doing this for other sports? Or maybe you already do?I haven’t dressed up for any other sports besides basketball. I haven’t decided if I will do it for other sports as well.9. How far will OSU go in the NCAA tournament?I believe we have a pretty solid team. I predict that we will go out in a close loss in the Sweet 16.10. Is there a Ms. Piggy? There is no Ms. Piggy at the moment, but I don’t think Kermit wouldn’t mind if there was!If you’re looking for the comments section, it has moved to our forum, The Chamber. Thank you and cheers! 10 QI wanted to start a new feature on PFB called 10 questions where we interview random O-State players, coaches, personalities, alumni, etc. Amilian has done a good job of this in the past but his interviewees have had a tendency to…ramble (is that the right word?) so I thought for the sake of streamlining things (and to bookend the “10 thoughts” stuff I’m always doing) we would call it 10 questions from now on.Our first interview is a frog. Not just any frog though. This frog.I laughed several times last night because of this guy…#okstate pic.twitter.com/TlTE1lE0ZP— Ryan Sharp (@Ryan_M_Sharp) February 21, 2013He is Daniel Smola of Piedmont, Oklahoma and I appreciate him taking some time for the blog.1. When did you start the Kermit thing? The Kermit thing was started my senior year at Piedmont High School.2. Why do you do it?A group of my friends and I wanted to dress up in costumes in our high school student section.3. And why Kermit? The costume I actually wanted was a Gumby costume, but one of my friends got it before I could. Kermit was the second best thing so I got it.4. How did it come about? My friends and I wanted to get costumes for our high school basketball games. We seemed to have a solid group committed to the idea, but a lot of them ended up backing out so only a few of us went through with costumes.5. Do the players/coaches know who you are or say anything to you?None of them have said anything to me so I assume that they don’t know who I am. I have three more years to go to the games so who knows what will end up happening.last_img read more

Film Study: How Good is Kenny Hill?

| vknwcynx

first_imgAfter an inconsistent junior year at TCU, quarterback Kenny Hill is off to a solid start in 2017. The senior signal caller has thrown for eight touchdowns through three games, and he’s coming off an excellent performance against SMU where he threw for four touchdowns and completed 80 percent of his passes.Hill can be an electric dual-threat weapon for the Horned Frogs, but his style of play is unpredictable. Here’s a quick look at the Horned Frog’s starting quarterback.Hill has above-average arm strength, and when he has a clean pocket, he can make all the throws:Hill also has the ability to escape pressure in the pocket:And he’s frequently used in the run game:Although Hill’s highlights are impressive, his mistakes can be egregious. First off, Hill has a tendency to stare down his receivers, which can lead to incompletions:And interceptions:And his accuracy occasionally comes into question:Hill has had a relatively strong start, but his level of competition hasn’t been elite by any means. We talked about Hill being the X-factor last year, and we’re repeating it this year because it’s the same story.Hill is often as good as the talent around him, and he’s undoubtedly benefited from an improved offensive unit. But with running back Kyle Hicks’ status in question, the Horned Frogs might be relying on Hill a bit more than usual.Whether he’ll continue a strong start or revert to his 2016 performance against OSU is yet to be seen, but he’ll be the difference between a home-team blowout and a closely contested game. How do you think Kenny Hill will play against the Cowboys? Enterprise Ups LPG Storage Capacity at Houston Channel

| vknwcynx

first_imgzoom A Houston-based midstream energy services provider Enterprise Products Partners has completed the expansion of its liquefied petroleum gas export terminal at the Houston Ship Channel, which will increase the facility’s capacity for loading fully refrigerated, low-ethane propane to 9 million barrels per month.Enhancements to existing refrigeration infrastructure, designed to add 2,500 barrels per hour (BPH) or 1.5 MMBbls per month of incremental loading capacity, will allow Enterprise to accommodate additional three ships per month.Work is also progressing on construction of a new refrigeration train that will increase loading rates by another 11,000 BPH and is on schedule for completion in the fourth quarter of 2015. Once the final expansion phase has been completed, Enterprise will have the capability to load up to 16 MMBbls per month of LPG, which equates to 29 vessels.”With these expansion projects, Enterprise is demonstrating its commitment to supporting the producers who have done a miraculous job of developing our domestic reserves, particularly in the shale basins across the country,” said A.J. “Jim” Teague, chief operating officer of Enterprise’s general partner.”By increasing capacity at our LPG export terminal, we are providing customers with access to international markets, which helps facilitate continued domestic production that would otherwise be significantly curtailed.”Enterprise’s LPG terminal currently has approximately 1,800 cargoes scheduled from 2015 to 2024.last_img read more

first_imgConstruction of a new roundabout in Fall River will help reduce highway tie-ups and improve safety on Highway 102 and Highway 118. Work on the $2,611,422 contract, awarded to Dexter Construction Co. Ltd., will begin Sunday, Sept. 28, and involves the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Highway 2 and the ramps from Highway 102 and Highway 118. The roundabout will help improve the flow of rush-hour traffic through the intersection. To reduce traffic delays during construction, most of the work will be done during the night, but delays are possible during the day. Drivers should plan extra time for their trip and use caution when travelling through the construction zone. Use an alternate route if possible. Construction is scheduled to be completed before the end of December. Modern roundabouts have a proven track record around the world for reducing the number, and severity, of collisions and for keeping traffic moving smoothly.last_img read more

North American stock markets rally TSX surges more than 100 points

first_imgCanada’s main stock index surged more than 100 points Friday in a broad-based advance led by the industrials sector. The S&P/TSX composite index advanced 107.93 points to 15,729.40, with stocks in the industrial sector gaining on average 1.38 per cent. The Toronto index also got a lift from the energy sector, which rose 0.67 per cent on the strength of the price of oil, said Macan Nia, a senior investment strategist at Manulife Investments. The price of the commodity jumped nearly two per cent with the June crude contract rising US$1.29 to US$69.72 per barrel.Nia said there are potential upside catalysts for oil, such as possible new sanctions on Iran, that could raise the prospects of a tighter global crude supply environment and send prices higher in the near term, which would be positive for the TSX.Both the Canadian dollar and the TSX have a high correlation to the price of oil, due to the large number of energy companies listed on the TSX as well as the sector’s primacy in the Canadian economy. In New York, indices also made gains. The Dow Jones industrial average gained 332.36 points to 24,262.51, the S&P 500 index rose 33.69 points to 2,663.42 and the Nasdaq composite index moved up 121.47 points to 7,209.62.That rally came after the United States Department of Labor released employment figures for the month of April. American employers added 164,000 jobs last month and average hourly earnings rose 2.6 per cent from the year before, according to the report. These figures were weaker than expected, said Nia.“It eased any concerns that the markets may have had in terms of a faster interest rate hiking cycle and that was positive for U.S. equities,” he said. The Canadian dollar was trading at 77.75 cents US, unchanged from Thursday.Elsewhere in commodities, the June natural gas contract fell about two cents to US$2.71 per mmBTU. The June gold contract advanced US$2.00 to US$1,314.70 an ounce and the July copper contract moved up roughly half a cent to about US$3.09 a pound.— With files from the Associated Press.Follow @AleksSagan on Twitter.last_img read more

Plans to privatize Puerto Rico power after Maria hit snag

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Plans to quickly privatize Puerto Rico’s hurricane-damaged electrical power system have hit a snag with the U.S. territory’s House and Senate at odds over a bill to allow sale of the transmission and distribution system.Senators are balking at the bill because the House of Representatives amended the measure to cap the price of energy at 20 cents per kilowatt hour — a price that some say may be too low if generation costs rise. The governor announced plans to privatize the system more than a year ago, in part to attract investment the debt-laden government itself cannot afford.Senators on Monday announced their opposition to dozens of investors and energy experts at a two-day conference on rebuilding the power grid more than a year after Hurricane Maria destroyed it.The Associated Press read more

First UN human rights office opens in Tunisia

| vknwcynx

“The whole world watched with amazement and growing respect as Tunisians kept demanding your rights, refusing to be cowed by the repression, the arrests, the torture and all the injuries and tragic loss of life that occurred,” said High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay, as she opened the office in the capital, Tunis. “The impact of these actions, on Tunisia itself, on the wider region, and indeed all across the world is hard to measure and is far from completed. But it has unquestionably been enormous and truly inspirational,” she said. The new office is not only the first in Tunisia, but also the first one in any of the five North African countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. Ms. Pillay noted that although the Tunisian transition was also far from over, great strides had already been made since the ouster of the long-standing regime of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali earlier this year. In the past three weeks alone, she said, Tunisia had ratified four important international treaties, including three in a single day – the Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights; the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture; and the UN Convention on Enforced Disappearances, all ratified on 29 June.A week earlier, on 24 June, Tunisia had become the 116th State to ratify the Rome Statute for the International Criminal Court (ICC), and the first country in North Africa to do so. Ms. Pillay also pointed out that there were more than 80 officially registered political parties, compared to only seven before the revolution, and that Tunisia had become the first country in the Arab world to legally enshrine gender parity in the electoral rolls for the upcoming elections. She stressed that women played an important role in the protests against the previous repressive regime and achieving true parity with men in the new Tunisia will be an important factor in the country’s social and economic development. It is also vital that Tunisian youth are given hope for the future, having played a key role in the protest movement. “Their full involvement in the evolution of the new State is essential if it is to remain forward-thinking and dynamic,” Ms. Pillay added. The High Commissioner marked the occasion of the opening of the first UN human rights office in the region by planting an olive tree, “a simple symbolic act which I believe encompasses all the hopes we all have for the new Tunisia.“I therefore hope that the olive tree […] will reflect the advent of a new era of human rights and democracy in Tunisia. And that, 2,000 years from now both this tree and Tunisia can look back on 2011 as the magical year when it all began,” said Ms. Pillay. 14 July 2011The United Nations today opened its first human rights office in Tunisia, with the world body’s top rights official lauding the country for inspiring the quest for political reform and human dignity across North Africa and the Middle East with its own popular uprising earlier this year. read more

Cubs Fans Finally Exit Purgatory After One Of Baseballs Greatest Games

| vknwcynx

Related: Hot Takedown And yet, his Cubs fandom is strong. Hearing him talk about those afternoons at the ballpark, I was struck by how much he loved the game, and not necessarily the laundry. “We went to [Wrigley] to enjoy baseball, not necessarily to watch the Cubs win,” he said. “You knew the Cubs stunk.” My dad loved hopping on the train before grabbing prime seats at the ballpark for a buck twenty-five, and soaking in the neighborhood afterwards. Sixty-some years later, the experience remains, to some extent at least, intact: the el runs right beside the very same stadium, and Wrigleyville is as lively as ever, though you won’t find seats for $1.25 any more.As the years went on and the World Series drought seasons accrued, myths began to accumulate about the Cubs’ losing ways. First there was the Curse of the Billy Goat, started in 1945 when the Cubs kicked Billy Sianis and his foul-smelling pet goat out of the ballpark. Then there was the Curse of the Black Cat in 1969. Even the hexes of other franchises can be connected, however tangentially, to the Cubs. My father doesn’t buy any of it. “I’m not sentimental that way,” my dad said. “That curse stuff is kind of ridiculous — they just didn’t play very well!” Others in my family are more mawkish: Legend has it that the ashes of a certain relative of mine were surreptitiously dumped in the ivy of the outfield wall at Wrigley. My father’s was the variant of Cubs fandom that I grew up with. The Cubs have always been losers, if also sometimes lovable. Not cursed, just not playing very well. That’s what made me see defeat around every corner, and this season of complete dominance so unexpected. As my dad realized in the ’50s, there’s something liberating about knowing your team is going to lose. With the outcome sealed, you become free to enjoy the game and the experience of the ballpark for whatever it is. Sometime in the middle of the incredible, marathon, rain-delayed epic that was Game 7, I came to that conclusion myself.Good baseball transcends the teams that play it, and Wednesday had the best baseball I’ve ever seen. That the Cubs won their first championship in more than a century was a pleasant side effect of that matchup. Even with all of those hexes out of the way, I hope that Cubs fans can continue to appreciate the songs, the stadium, the neighborhood, and most importantly the game itself. Curses, droughts and even World Series wins be damned, that’s always been the best part of being a Cubs fan. There was no better way for the curse to end. The Chicago Cubs won their first World Series in 108 years last night, in perhaps the most exciting baseball game of all time. I inherited my Cubs fandom from my father, so for me, the final out that sealed the game was joyful, exhilarating and ecstatic. But it was nowhere near as good as the Game 7 that preceded it.The first thing I did after Chicago won was call my dad, Tom Arthur. He’s been a Cubs fan his whole life. Born on the north side of the city, he moved to the suburbs around 1945. He remembers being excited about the prospect of living near Phil Cavarretta, a postseason stalwart for the last great run of Cubs teams. (Coincidentally, current Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo wears the same number 44 as Cavarretta). The 1945 season was the last time the Cubs made the World Series until this year, and for much of the time in between, they simply weren’t very good.He wasn’t in Chicago to see the famous Cubs double-play trio of Tinker to Evers to Chance around the turn of the century, but he recalls Miksis to Smalley to Grandstand in ’52 — so named because the ball usually found its way into the stands rather than to the first baseman.“I was only in Little League, but even I could tell that Roy Smalley wasn’t a very good shortstop,” he told me.1My dad is right. Roy Smalley racked up only 2.2 wins above replacement in six full years with the Cubs, never once registering an above-average season. He remembers better the greats from other teams: Don Newcombe throwing to Roy Campanella for the Brooklyn Dodgers, and kids swarming players trying to get autographs postgame. But from 1946 to 1956 — his prime days as a young baseball fan—the Cubs averaged a winning percentage of only .443, never once making the playoffs. The FBI is now investigating.“There’s a lot of hatred in the world,” Zvi said. “You have to be very, very careful and live a little bit more conservatively nowadays if you wanna be safe. I think it’s just a phase.”If you have any information on who made the threat, call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. The younger kids were moved to the Walgreens, near Pine Island Road and 57th Avenue, and older kids have moved to the parking lot of the Pentecostal Church, two blocks north of the JCC.Parent Dr. Jaime Huysman said these kinds of threats hit close to home. “For me, it’s particularly scary,” he said. “My father’s a Holocaust survivor, and I just called him up, and he’s crying on the phone. This shouldn’t be happening in today’s day and age.”“It’s really hard living this way. I’m just a normal person,” Rothschild said. “I wanna go to school. I want to hang out with my friends. This is preventing that, and it’s really upsetting that we have to go through this.”The school and the Jewish Federation of Broward County released a statement that read in part, “There anti-Semitic incidents are deeply unsettling to the Jewish Community, causing fear and anxiety, intended to interfere with day-to-day life. The campus serves not just the Jewish community but the entire community.”Davie Police said the threat is not credible, but they remain on the scene.center_img DAVIE, FLA.
