Minnesota quarterback Zack Annexstad hopes to follow a similar path.Annexstad is a true freshman walk-on for the Golden Gophers. He was also the Week 1 starter at quarterback, and led Minnesota to a season-opening win over New Mexico State. The former IMG Academy quarterback had an up-and-down performance, but certainly one you’d take from any player in his first start. He finished 16-for-33 for 220 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions. After a shaky start Minnesota won the game 48-10.Back-up Tanner Morgan threw one pass in relief. It is pretty clearly Annexstad’s team. Before the game, Zack Annexstad got a call from Baker Mayfield. He didn’t want to reveal too much about the conversation, but they reportedly spoke for 15-20 minutes. Head coach P.J. Fleck was extremely complimentary of the former Oklahoma superstar. From the St. Paul Pioneer Press:“It was good for Zack to hear from him because people had mentioned him,” Gophers coach P.J. Fleck said Monday. “Any time you can get advice from a guy who has been through what you’ve been through — it was a good moment for him to start his career.”Annextstad had a succinct response to his coach about the call: “ ‘That was cool.’ ”Fleck had met Mayfield at a few college football awards banquets over the years and set up the call to Fleck’s phone.“I’m very appreciative of Baker doing that,” Fleck said. “It says a lot about Baker Mayfield, too.”Annexstad turned down scholarship offers from schools like Illinois and Cincinnati to play for his home state Golden Gophers. Fleck revealed that he will likely be on scholarship next season. For now, though, he is in the same spot that Mayfield found himself in, when he started his career at Texas Tech.Minnesota has a tougher game this weekend.
