Ravi Shastri disrespecting himself: Mohammad Azharuddin on India coach’s over-the-top praise of Virat Kohli’s team

first_imgHead coach Ravi Shastri’s over-the-top praise of the current Indian team for winning back-to-back Test series in Sri Lanka, has met with all round criticism. Shastri, in his assessment, belittled Indian teams of the past which did not amuse former skipper Mohammad Azharuddin either. In an interview to India Today, Azhar says, “He’s being disrespectful to himself as well, as he has been part of Indian teams of the past. But you can’t stop people from commenting.”After defeating an inexperienced Sri Lanka side by 304 runs in the first Test, Shastri had said, “There have been a lot of big names who have played for 20 years, they have come to Sri Lanka many times and never won a series. This team is used to doing things a lot of other teams have not done.”While Shastri was factually right, he overlooked the depleted strength of both the current Sri Lanka side and the one India defeated in 2015 when he was team director.Clearly unhappy with Shastri’s sensational statement, Azhar said, “Sometimes I don’t know why people make such comments. I don’t think such comments deserve a reaction from me. He has been part of sides of the past as well. So I will leave it at that.”While India are well on course to whitewash the inexperienced Sri Lankans in the ongoing series, stiffer challenges await the Indian side with a few overseas tours scheduled.Asked if he thought the Virat Kohli-Ravi Shastri captain-coach combine can win tougher battles ahead with India due to tour South Africa and England, Azhar was non committal. “We will have to wait and watch. Sri Lanka has been a poor side.advertisement”It’s not India’s fault, so taking nothing away from them. But when the ball swings and seams, we will have to do well. We saw in the Champions Trophy as well, we struggled. When the ball moves, India have to deliver,” he says.last_img
