Arsenal legend in blast at Emery, claims he’s the same as Wenger

first_imgTony Adams believes Unai Emery is too similar to Arsene Wenger and may not be the right man to put Arsenal back among the elite. The Spaniard replaced Wenger in the summer and has been tasked with returning the club to the Champions League and pushing for the Premier League title after a 14-year drought. But Emery has had a tough start to his career at the Emirates, losing his two opening games against Manchester City and Chelsea, and Adams is unsure he is the man to make the sweeping changes needed at the north London club. The Gunners’ legendary former captain was a regular critic of his old boss Wenger, claiming the team did not have enough steel or defensive resilience under the Frenchman, and he fears little will change under his successor.Adams told talkSPORT after the first game of the season against City he had doubts about Emery and the 3-2 defeat to Chelsea only reinforced his views about the 46-year-old.Speaking to The Sun, he said: “After Arsene, I was so excited with the prospect of a real change — it was a great chance to do things differently but against City it was an Arsene Wenger performance — only more so.“I felt so sad about that. Everyone knows what Arsenal have been missing — it’s that steel, that resilience. “Whether Emery can coach it or not I don’t know yet, it is early days.“But then away to Chelsea they were all over the place again — you’re not watching them thinking ‘there’s a change here’.“It’s the same goalkeeper, the same style of play — it just feels the same, there’s no one rocking the boat.“Chief executive Ivan Gazidis has gone for a ‘head coach’ because they don’t want someone with the power Arsene had.“But they still want to appease the fans with a style of play like Arsene had. They don’t want to lose the ideology of the ‘beautiful game’ . . . whatever that is.” Where Ancelotti ranks with every Premier League boss for trophies won 2 REVEALED 2 England’s most successful clubs of the past decade, according to trophies won Which teams do the best on Boxing Day in the Premier League era?
