Group calls for recall of mayor

first_imgBut Murga believes the council’s recent action to rehire fired City Manager Chuck Fuentes, a move spearheaded by Beilke, will help recall organizers attract supporters this time around. Council members voted in September to fire Fuentes, but a new council majority, voted into office on March 6, rehired him on March 22. “We’ve can’t afford to not be successful,” Murga said. “Now they’ve made it easier for us by bringing Chuck Fuentes back.” He claimed Fuentes’ rehiring resulted in the city wasting $17,500 that council members approved to hire a head-hunting firm to recruit potential candidates for the city manager job. Murga said he has filed a complaint with the Public Integrity Unit of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, alleging Beilke has abused his power. PICO RIVERA – For the second time in eight months, Mayor Ron Beilke has been served with papers notifying him that he is the target of an attempted recall. Beilke was served the notice by Raul Murga, who heads Pico Rivera Community for Truth in Politics – C-TIP – before Tuesday night’s council meeting. The mayor said the recall attempt, like a previous effort that failed last month, will go nowhere. “These people have separated themselves from the community and have made themselves a nuisance that I believe the residents have grown tired of,” Beilke said. Dave Demerjian, head of the unit, said his office is reviewing the complaint to see if it warrants a formal investigation. Beyond that, Dermerjian said he had no comment. Beilke said he has done nothing wrong. “I had an obligation and duty to make sure the city manager position would be filled,” he said. He agreed that the council had essentially “thrown away” the $17,500 paid to the consultant, but blamed that on the previous council, saying the panel “never should have terminated the city manager in the first place.” Last month, Murga’s group failed to meet a deadline to submit signatures from at least 20percent of the city’s registered voters to force a recall election against Beilke and two former council members.
